The Three Types of Bin Dischargers

The Wrights Dowson Group is a reputed manufacturer of conveyance and bulk handling equipment in the UK. Additionally, to screw conveyors, we provide a wide range of accessories and tools to streamline the handling processes of various industries, including animal grain, waste, recycling, food and more.

Bin Dischargers play an essential role, especially in powder and grain applications. They prevent common problems with flow that might cause the product to get stuck in a silo or discharge unevenly, leading to product loss and contamination.

This article will introduce the three types of bin discharge systems for bulk products.

Bin Discharger

Vibration

Vibrating bin dischargers send vibrations through a bulk product like chemicals or pellets contained in a bin or hopper. In addition, shaking the structure of the container creates better flow by unclogging particles that may have stuck together or clung to the sides of the bin.

An example of this model is a bin activator. The vibrator in this discharger is not placed directly on the bottom part of the container. Instead, a stand-alone cone forms a bottom section of the bin where the vibrators shake only the lower part of the container. This is where materials most frequently bridge or arch.

The advantage of vibrators and bin activators is that it is one of the most affordable systems to install. It is also efficient with free-flowing materials and granular.

Air Injection or Fluidization

Another type of bin discharger uses pressurized air sprayed or injected into the container. This usually happens at its base or at its cone and serves to fluidize dry chemicals. Because the compressed or injected air aerates the substances, they can be discharged much like a liquid.

The benefits of this setup are that they work well with non-hygroscopic material that doesn’t react with water or moisture. It is also a straightforward system composed only of a spray nozzle installed within the container.

Mechanical

The final type of bin discharger is a mechanical bin agitator or mechanical discharger. This consists of an agitation device called an arch breaker, which utilises flexible blades mounted on a single centre shaft in the bin to rotate within the base of the container. The motion breaks up any arches and bridges and gently agitates the powder for an easy discharge.

The benefit of this model is that it doesn’t vibrate the whole structure, doesn’t require compressed air and injects no moisture into the container. As a result, it can discharge products efficiently even at high rates and is cheaper than air injection for high discharge rates.
