Rotary Shaft Seal: Frequently Asked Questions
A rotary shaft seal is a product designed to protect the area around rotating machinery shafts such as conveyors and bulk handling equipment. They are sometimes called oil or dirt seals because they protect the bearings of rotating shafts from water, dirt, oil and other harmful particles.
This article will cover some common questions surrounding rotary shaft seals.
- What is the difference between rotary shaft seals and lips
seals?
Before rotary shaft seals, a lip seal would be used to squeeze around rotary shafts. They were commonly made of elastomers, sometimes partly encased in metal. But they were often prone to fracturing and could only cover small surfaces.
On the other hand, a rotary shaft seal is a split seal machined from stainless steel. The split seal allows the component to quickly fit and dismount from shafts as required. This means the seal can be regularly cleaned without having to replace it entirely. Moreover, the material gives the seal longevity and is easily sanitised.
- How is a rotary shaft seal done?
Before you begin, ensure the shaft is cleaned of dust, oil or grease. Then follow these steps:
- The seal should be assembled
around the shaft. The split line should be uniform with no raised
edges.
- The seal should be housed
perpendicular to the shaft. There should be equal spacing between the
shaft and the ID of the seal. The angle should not exceed 1 degree.
- Slide the seal onto the studs
or bulkhead.
- Use an RTV sealant to keep the
seal in place.
- Next, assemble PTFE rotor cups
around the shaft and screw them into place.
- Now, take the split rotor cups
and assemble them around the shaft. Then, glue it into place. Do not glue
the split line if you intend to remove it regularly.
- Finally, add the second PTFE rotor cup and assemble the metal steel housing around the shaft. Tighten the bolts and add a pressure regulator to each seal.
