When Do Screw Conveyors Need Hanger Bearings?

The Wrights Dowson Group enjoys an established reputation for producing high-quality bulk equipment for various industries. We specialise in designing and manufacturing Screw Conveyors for any type of material. As such, we also supply plants with hanger bearings and other necessary accessories.

Not all screw conveyors need hanger bearings, but if your installation would benefit from these extra components, there are a few things to keep in mind.

What Do Hanger Bearings Do?

Hanger bearings provide a bearing surface that supports screw sections throughout the conveyor. They are replaceable parts that improve the stability and rigidity of the shaft. Hanger bearings are available in multiple materials, including plastics, wood, metal and ceramic. Each material has its own benefits and drawbacks, so the exact choice will depend on the material you are conveying, as well as the size of the screw conveyor.

Hanger bearings are replaceable parts, so when they're worn, you can exchange them for a new set without risking the actual conveyor succumbing to weight or wear and tear.

When Does a Screw Conveyor Require Hanger Bearings?

It’s possible to accommodate screw conveyors up to six meters without internal hanger bearings, even if the conveyor is inclined at 20-30 degrees. However, those longer conveyors that feature several intervals in their design will require hanger bearings at those points. The bearings will then support the screw and prevent it from sagging.

When installing hanger bearings, it’s essential to ensure that each screw segment is aligned well to prevent excessive loading. The screw should also not catch on the bearings when there is stress on the conveyance system.

Hanger bearings are also often only used on nearly horizontal screws. However, this can be a detriment to flow. Therefore, it’s essential to take special care to prevent flow reduction, ensuring that the hanger, bearings and flights work together.

The Wrights Dowson Group manufactures Screw conveyors to the exact specifications our clients provide. We use 3D imaging software and CAD to design the machine and plan the use of hanger bearings long before manufacturing or installation begins. This way, we can ensure that no component of the screw conveyor negatively impacts the efficiency.

We also work with you to ensure the suitable material for hanger bearings is available. For example, we offer self-lubricating hanger bearings constructed from bronze and ceramic hanger bearings and inserts at the Wrights Dowson Group.
